Dr Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has been sworn in as President and Commander-in-Chief of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
President Jonathan was sworn in in the morning of Thursday May 6 in the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock Abuja, by the Chief Justice of the Federation, Mr Justice Aloysius Katsina-Alu.

This follows the death of President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua last night.

The swearing in ceremony was witnessed by the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, who represented Senate President David Mark, House Speaker Honorable Dimeji Bankole, Governors, members of the National Assembly, members of the Diplomatic Corps and other eminent Nigerians.

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua passes away

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua is dead. He passed away on Wednesday night in the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock, Abuja.

The Acting President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, received news of the passage of President Yar’Adua with great shock and sadness.

According to him, “Nigeria has lost the jewel on its crown, and even the heavens mourn with our nation tonight”

Dr. Jonathan described the death of the president as sad, unfortunate and regrettable. “As individuals and as a nation we prayed for the recovery of Mr. President. But we take solace in the fact that the Almighty is the giver and taker of all life”.

Dr. Jonathan offered heartfelt condolences to President Yar’Adua’s widow, Hajiya Turai Yar’Adua, the entire Yar’Adua family, the people of Katsina State, and Nigerians both at home and the world over.

As a mark of respect for our departed leader, the Acting President has cancelled all official engagements. He has also declared a national mourning for seven days. During this period, the Nigerian flag will fly at half mast.

The remains of the President would be laid to rest in Katsina on Thursday, 6th May, 2010, at 2pm. Nigerians are to observe the day as a work free day.

President Yar’Adua commissions NIPP project in Kwara

President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua has commissioned an independent power station built by the Kwara state government in Gamno, near the capital Ilorin. At the commissioning ceremony in Gamno on Monday July 27, witnessed by five state governors, the President called on state governments involved in the Integrated National Power Project to cooperate with the Federal Government to ensure speedy completion of the project.
President Yar’Adua described the NIPP as key to the socio-economic development of the country and commended Governor Bukola Saraki for his timely intervention.
He asked the steering committee of NIPP to ensure prompt payment of funds expended by the state government on the Gamno project and directed the ministry of power to reinforce power supply to the northern parts of the state.
Power minister, Dr Rilwan Babalola said the NIPP was conceived to address electricity problem in the country
He stated that the objective of the Gamno NIPP was to improve power supply to Kwara and Oyo states.
Earlier Governor Saraki requested for improvement on the 33KVA line in Jebba to enable it have more impact on the people.
The Governor expressed satisfaction that the project which has been on the drawing board for over 26 years was completed by his government.
Present at the ceremony were the governors of Oyo, Osun, Ekiti, Kaduna and the deputy governor of Kogi state.
